FOCUS
Kelley’s research focuses on autistic encounters with law enforcement as a public health issue. It seeks to clarify the relationship between social determinants of health and family wellbeing within the context of police brutality. There is almost no academic research focused on disability and policing practices, particularly as it relates to developmental disabilities like autism. Kelley’s work will address this gap by exploring how Black families are resilient and have survived for decades in the face of dangerous, oppressive policing practices. It will explore how disability shapes mental health functioning for autistic individuals and their caregivers. Kelley’s work will identify other supports needed to enhance wellbeing and equity. She also seeks to offer evidence-based, culturally appropriate strategies that transform the relationship of mistrust and trauma between law enforcement and communities of color.
