Adrian is committed to ending intergenerational family violence in order to promote health equity in Latino communities. Currently, Latino families suffer from disproportionate rates of domestic violence. Adrian’s research focuses on Latino fathers enrolled in batterer intervention programs to extend the impact of such programs to the larger family system. Overall, his research seeks to address the issue of intimate partner violence through intervention, prevention, and ultimately, policy change and creation.

Adrian is drawn toward working with Latino populations that are often left out of the research literature pertaining to gender violence issues, such as intimate partner violence. He is committed to advocating at the policy level for the resources that Latino families need after being exposed to family violence.

The Exploration of Latino BIP Participants’ Experiences of Oppression and Expressions of Critical Consciousness
This dissertation study aims to understand how Latino battering intervention program (BIP) participants relate their experiences of oppression to their use of intimate partner violence (IPV) behaviors, and also investigates how critical consciousness is expressed amongst Latinos enrolled in BIPs. Additionally, the current dissertation study seeks to explore BIP providers’ and Latino BIP participants’ beliefs around the potential benefits of incorporating critical consciousness into BIPs’ curriculum. Focus groups are being conducted with BIP providers and Latino BIP participants, sampling from community-based BIPs that offer specialty groups for Spanish speaking participants.
